2026 Illinois Agrichemical Container Collection Schedule

Illinois agrichemical users will once again have opportunities this summer to recycle used pesticide containers through the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s statewide container recycling initiative. The program, supported by IFCA and several agricultural industry partners, continues to provide an environmentally responsible disposal option for approved plastic pesticide containers.

The recycling effort has operated for more than 20 years and has diverted well over a million pounds of plastic from landfills by converting collected materials into new products used within the agricultural industry.

Collection events will be held at ag retail facilities throughout Illinois during July and early August, in addition to several permanent drop-off locations that accept containers year-round.

Growers and commercial applicators may recycle approved high-density polyethylene (#2 HDPE) pesticide containers, including standard jugs, larger drums, and mini-bulk containers. Before containers are delivered to a collection site, they must be thoroughly cleaned, emptied, and prepared according to program guidelines.

To qualify for recycling:

Containers should be rinsed immediately after use using either a triple-rinse or pressure-rinse process.
All caps, seals, labels, fittings, and metal pieces must be removed.
Containers must be dry and free of pesticide residue.
Large containers and mini-bulks should be cut or punctured as directed by the program.

Program organizers note that containers containing liquid or significant product residue cannot be accepted. Operations with large numbers of reusable mini-bulk containers are encouraged to contact the Illinois Department of Agriculture before preparing them for recycling.

Questions regarding preparation requirements or site participation may be directed to the Illinois Department of Agriculture Pesticide Hotline at 1-800-641-3934.
