Jeff Reffett, a custom applicator with Nutrien Ag Solutions in Galesburg, IL, has been named the winner for the 2025 Illinois Custom Applicator of the Year. With a career spanning over four decades and a life marked by perseverance, community service, and professionalism, Jeff exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond in the ag retail industry.
Jeff began his spraying career in 1979 and has been in the ag business since 1992. For him, motivation comes not just from the job itself, but from the pride he takes in his work. “As you drive by the fields each day, you want your work to be something you're proud of—because others are driving those same roads too,” he said. “It’s a good feeling when a customer stops you at the gas station or grocery store to say thank you.”
Jeff hits the field running in his John Deere 612R sprayer, often covering over 1,000 acres a day within a 50-mile radius. He and his trusted truck driver coordinate everything from loading to water runs with efficiency and safety always top of mind. “It’s not just about how many acres you do—it’s about doing it right,” he says.
Jeff’s proudest accomplishments extend far beyond the field. His family—especially his children and 13 grandchildren—are at the heart of his life. He’s a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona, where he serves as bell ringer and has twice been elected to the church board, including two years as president. A cancer survivor himself, Jeff gives back through his work with the American Cancer Society and the Knox County Relay for Life.
Perhaps most inspiring is the grain fundraiser Jeff started seven years ago. With the help of generous local farmers—many of whom aren't even customers—and support from Nutrien Ag Solutions, Jeff organizes the collection of grain donations during harvest. The grain is sold at the elevator, and the proceeds—averaging around $20,000 annually—are split between the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “It takes work, but it’s so rewarding,” Jeff says. “The number of people who want to give just keeps growing.”
When he's not working, Jeff enjoys fishing, playing baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren—the same ones who inspire him to keep giving back.
Jeff Reffett’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and dedication. He’s not only a standout applicator but a pillar of his community, and his nomination for Illinois Custom Applicator of the Year is a testament to the impact one person can make—both in the field and far beyond it.
