Transportation Conditions Continue Creating Fertilizer Logistics Challenges

Transportation conditions continue playing a major role in fertilizer availability and pricing across Illinois as members move through the spring application season. While fertilizer supply overall remains available, transportation bottlenecks throughout the river, rail, and trucking network continue affecting delivery timing, freight costs, and inventory movement across the Midwest.

One of the biggest concerns remains water levels along the Mississippi River system. Reduced river levels can limit barge draft capacity, meaning barges cannot be loaded to normal volumes. Even relatively small draft reductions can remove thousands of tons of fertilizer capacity from a single tow, increasing transportation costs and slowing product movement north into Illinois terminals and distribution facilities.

Illinois fertilizer movement remains especially vulnerable to Mississippi River conditions because a large percentage of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer entering through Gulf Coast import terminals ultimately travels north through the river system before reaching Midwest retailers. When river movement slows, additional pressure is often placed on rail systems and truck transportation.

Rail transportation also continues experiencing seasonal strain as fertilizer demand, grain movement, and general freight traffic compete for equipment and rail capacity throughout the Corn Belt. Delays in railcar availability and switching schedules can impact terminal replenishment timing, particularly during narrow seasonal application windows.

Members may also continue seeing:

  • Increased freight surcharges
  • Tighter delivery schedules
  • More frequent shipment rescheduling
  • Greater emphasis on early inventory positioning
  • Reduced flexibility on short-notice product movement

Transportation costs remain one of the largest factors influencing fertilizer pricing volatility, particularly when multiple issues—including river conditions, rail congestion, weather events, and global shipping disruptions—occur simultaneously.
