Air Not Allowed in Ammonia Tanks

It's cold out and that slows down the ammonia application process.  But please keep in mind that utilizing an air compressor to pump air into ammonia tanks to increase tank pressure is strictly prohibited in the Illinois ammonia regulations.

Air is the primary cause of stress corrosion cracking of steel in ammonia tanks.  With ammonia being a closed loop system, it is also likely you would contaminate your storage tanks, the cargo tanks that deliver product into your facility as well as the supply terminals.  The Illinois Department of Agriculture rules specifically state “Any device used for the introduction of atmospheric air into any part of anhydrous ammonia storage, transportation or application systems is prohibited."  Violations of this section of the rules can result in monetary penalties per each violation.  If you have questions about ammonia rules please contact John Rebholz.
