Illinois drought could impact winter wheat crop

Illinois is facing a drought in some parts of the state that could impact its winter wheat crop.

Mark Schleusener, statistician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Illinois, said as of Thursday, 55 percent of the state was abnormally dry or worse.

The southern and western parts of the state have been most affected.

“The southern part of the state is where our winter wheat is grown for the most part,” Schleusener said.

The recent cold snap in the state and much of the country could potentially kill the wheat.
