Des Moine Water Works shifts how it disposes of excess nitrates

Darrell Shook is not the first to ask what Des Moines Water Works does with the nitrates it filters from drinking water.
“I've heard that they put the nitrates back in the river at the allowable rate. If this is true, are they not causing a problem for water users downstream?” the retired farmer writes. “If this is not true, I think your readers would be interested in knowing what is done with the removed nitrates.”
